Yes, basic swimming ability is required for freediving. You should be comfortable in water and able to swim at least 100 meters without assistance. Our Try Freediving experience is perfect for beginners who can swim but have never tried breath-hold diving.

What is the difference between AIDA 1, 2, 3, and 4 courses?

AIDA 1 is an introductory course covering basic techniques and safety (pool only). AIDA 2 is the first open water certification, teaching depths up to 16-20 meters. AIDA 3 is intermediate level for depths up to 24-30 meters with advanced equalization. AIDA 4 (Master Freediver) is advanced training for depths up to 32-40 meters, including teaching skills.

How long can I hold my breath after taking a freediving course?

Most beginners can hold their breath for 1-2 minutes after proper training. With AIDA 2 certification, students typically achieve 2-3 minute breath-holds. The key is learning proper breathing techniques, relaxation, and the mammalian dive reflex - not just lung capacity.

Freediving is safe when practiced correctly with proper training and always with a buddy. Our AIDA-certified courses teach essential safety protocols including buddy systems, rescue techniques, and how to recognize and prevent blackouts. We never freedive alone.

What equipment do I need for freediving?

For beginners, we provide all equipment including masks, snorkels, wetsuits, weight belts, and long freediving fins. As you progress, you may want to invest in your own low-volume mask, comfortable wetsuit (3-5mm for Cyprus waters), and freediving-specific fins.

Can I freedive if I have ear problems?

It depends on the condition. Some ear issues can be managed with proper equalization techniques taught in our courses. However, conditions like perforated eardrums or active infections require medical clearance. We recommend consulting a doctor before starting if you have ongoing ear concerns.

What is the best time of year for freediving in Cyprus?

Cyprus offers year-round freediving with water temperatures ranging from 17°C in winter to 28°C in summer. The best visibility is typically from April to November. Summer (June-September) offers warmest waters, while spring and autumn provide excellent conditions with fewer crowds.

How deep can I dive after completing AIDA 2?

AIDA 2 certifies you for depths up to 16-20 meters, which is sufficient to explore most recreational dive sites, swim with marine life, and enjoy underwater photography. Many freedivers find this depth range perfectly satisfying for recreational diving.
